Aubrey H. Fitzgerald departed this life on Thursday, October 11, 2018.  Aubrey was born in Waynesboro, Virginia on October 28, 1932 to the late Cecil P. and Thomas A. Fitzgerald.  Aubrey spent his formative years in Halifax, VA and Waynesboro, VA, where he made many lifelong friends.  After a stellar football career as a Waynesboro High School Little Giant, he was fortunate to receive a football scholarship to attend the College of William and Mary, an event that would change his life.  His sophomore year at William and Mary led to two momentous events; playing on the legendary Iron Indians football team and most importantly, meeting Shirley Richardson, a beautiful and intelligent coed from Suffolk, VA.  After two more years and with Shirley’s help, Aubrey graduated from William and Mary in 1956 and married Shirley on October 12, 1957, a union that lasted for 61 loving years.  Following graduation, Aubrey went to work for the Upjohn Company as a sales representative in Newport News, where he lived for the next 61 years.

Aubrey was devoted to his family, his church, his community and the College of William and Mary.  Aubrey and Shirley raised three children, all of whom have degrees from William and Mary.  He was an active leader in the Warwick United Church of Christ and its choir up until the time of his passing.  In 1970 Aubrey was elected to the Newport News City Council and served 18 years on Newport News City Council, including two terms as Vice-Mayor.  Aubrey was also appointed to the Christopher Newport University Board of Visitors.  After his time on the Newport News City Council, Aubrey served on the Peninsula Airport Commission for nearly 20 years, including service as Chairman.  While Aubrey’s civic accomplishments are too numerous to list, his service with the Peninsula Kiwanis Club and the Newport News Republican City Committee were very important to him.  He could be found at Yates Precinct every election day for decades handing out materials, whether he was on the ballot or not.  In 2003 Aubrey’s civic accomplishments and devotion to the College of William and Mary were recognized when he received the Alumni Medallion, awarded for lifetime achievement and devotion to the College. The Fitzgerald Family will forever recall our summer vacations in Kill Devil Hills, tailgating for every Tribe home football game for over fifty years, camping in the Winnebago, skiing in Vermont and the simple wisdom and counsel provided by Aubrey.

Aubrey is survived by his wife of 61 years, Shirley Richardson Fitzgerald, his son, Thomas A. Fitzgerald II (Dora) and daughters, Lynn Fitzgerald Mitchell (Willie) and Ann Wells Fitzgerald.  Most proudly, he is also survived by five grandchildren, Shelby Mitchell, Scott Mitchell, Charles Fitzgerald, William Fitzgerald and Michael Fitzgerald.  He was predeceased by his parents and his brother Gunnery Sergeant, Harold Eugene Fitzgerald, USMC.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, October 14, 2018 from 7:00-8:30p.m. at Weymouth Funeral Home.  Funeral Services will be conducted on Monday, October 15, 2018 at 12Noon at Weymouth Funeral Home by Rev. Sallye Hardy.  Interment will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park.  Donations may be made to Warwick United Church of Christ or William & Mary Tribe Club. Arrangements by Weymouth Funeral Home.
