Newport News- Jean Ann Hollingsworth Smeland, 67, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 28, 2019 at Mary Immaculate Hospital surrounded by family and friends. Jean was born in Massillon, Ohio and had been a Peninsula resident since 1971. Retiring from Pop’s Drive-In in Yorktown after 20 years, Jean loved serving her customers breakfast with a smile, and a little sarcasm on the side. She loved young people, providing a motherly influence for anyone who needed a bit of guidance. Jean was a devoted caregiver to her grandchildren, a strong support for her children, and loved her husband with all her heart. She was a snappy dresser, had a great sense of humor and never missed a chance to champion her family in any endeavor.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Glenn and Marilyn Hollingsworth (Massillon, Ohio). She is survived by Bruce Smeland, her loving husband of 44 years; children, Tony Smeland (Stacie) of Seaford, Kristen Smeland (Thomas Akridge) of Toano, Jennifer Pabon (Lemont Britt) of Newport News and Damon Graham of Vermont; her brother, John Hollingsworth (Denise) of Ohio; her 3 grandchildren, Lexi, Ethan, and Lizzie; brother-in-law, Mark Smeland (Sherry) of Newport News, brother-in-law, Chris Smeland (Alisa) of Dutton; nieces, Amy, Rachel, Kaitlyn (Ali, Soren, Liv); nephews, Jacob (Lauren, Zoey), Jon (Rachael); a host of aunts, cousins and grand-dogs, Barkley, Jeter, Cosmo.

A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted on Tuesday, November 5, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church by Rev. John Grace. A reception will follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 477 Viking Dr Suite 130, Virginia Beach, VA 23452. Arrangements are by Weymouth Funeral Home.

The family wishes to express special thanks to the Emergency room and ICU staff at Mary Immaculate Hospital in Newport News for their great care of Jean, her family and friends who gathered as Jean passed to a better place in Heaven.
