Patricia “Pat” Roper Overman, 85, passed away September 18, 2018 surrounded by her family.  Pat was born in Bath, N.C. to the late Henry Napoleon Roper, Jr. and Margaret Tankard Roper.  She was the eldest of 7 children.

 
Her family moved to Newport News in 1941 where Pat graduated from Warwick High School in 1951.  She was active in school activities including the newspaper staff, May Court attendant, and head Majorette of the Marching Band.  She attended Mary Washington College before marrying Beverly Overman in 1955. Pat worked for Newport News Public Schools as a Library Assistant, retiring in 1993.


Pat was devoted to her family, friends and community.  A gracious hostess, she loved to cook and host family dinners, wedding receptions, and parties at her home.  Pat relished time spent traveling with her sisters to historic sites and the coastal Carolinas.  An avid bridge player, she remained an active member of her group for more than 50 years.  Pat was President of the Junior Woman’s Club of Hilton Village from 1967-68. She supported the Peninsula Fine Arts Center, Mariners Museum, and volunteered at the Hidenwood Presbyterian Church library and was a former member of Morrison United Methodist Church.


Pat was preceded in death by her husband, Beverly Lawrence Overman and survived by her children, David L. Overman, Jennifer Overman Privette, Susan Overman Denson (Steve); grandchildren Kevin L. Overman (Candi), Melissa Overman, Gary Overman, Mark S. Privette, Jr, Deanna B. McGreevy (Dylan), Caroline B. Privette, Tarah N. Washington (Andre), Mason Naumann, Morgan N. Tamayo (Lowell); and great-grandchildren Christianna Cleatin, Maddie Overman, Clark McGreevy, Ariana and Amaya Washington, Parker, Faye and Cole Tamayo; siblings, Nancy Setty, Sylvia Custer (Alan), Henry Roper (Janet), Margie Donald, Diane Merryman (Daryl), Doug Roper (Beth); and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.


The family thanks the staff at Riverside Hospice and the many caregivers who gave Pat quality of life during her illness.  A Memorial Service to celebrate her life will be held on Monday, September 24, 2018 at 11:00AM at  Warwick Memorial United Methodist Church with  reception to follow.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or charitable organization of your choice.  Arrangements by Weymouth Funeral Home.
