On Monday, August 26th 2019, Sarah Gilliam Elder, 84, loving wife, devoted mother, grandmother, and cherished friend to many, peacefully passed away.  Sarah was surrounded by her husband, daughters, and granddaughter. She was loved so very much and will be greatly missed by many.

Sarah was proud to be a small town girl who grew up with five brothers and sisters, and was raised in Big Stone Gap, Virginia. She was born in Bonny Blue, a small mining town in southwest Virginia in 1935.  She truly was a coal-miners daughter.  She was the daughter of Arthur Pat and Mary Katherine (Tilley) Gilliam.  She later followed her sisters, Patsy and Barbara, to Newport News when she was 17 and completed her final year of school here. She graduated from Newport News High School in 1953.  Sarah settled in Newport News, working for the telephone company (C&P), and retired as a supervisor with 30 years of service. During her work-life she met and married her husband, and love of her life, Stan. They enjoyed 38 years of marriage. Sarah was blessed to have many friends throughout her life and she kept in touch with them through the years.  She was an avid bridge player and a member of the Hampton Roads Duplicate Bridge Club for many years. Later, she played party bridge with several groups.  Sarah was known for her charitable nature, volunteering for The Salvation Army, and also through her commitment to the Telephone Pioneers organization.  She never met a stranger. It was her nature to reach out to people, especially in times of need. A faithful Christian woman all of her life, she was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.

She loved her church family very much. Sarah will always be remembered as an amazing cook, a caring, loving, wife and mother, and a true and steadfast friend.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Arthur P. and Mary K. Gilliam, her sisters, Patsy Yost, Barbara Woodward, and Nancy Telstad, her brothers, Philip Gilliam and Jimmy Gilliam.

She leaves to mourn, a husband, Charles Stanley Elder, daughters, Bonnie Jones and Melissa Elder, sons, Christopher Elder and Troy Elder, grandchildren, Jessica Coleman and Mitchell Elder, great-grandchildren, Connor and Jon Imotichey, niece, Jamie Bays, very special friends, Patt Walden and Pearl Arthur, and a host of extended family and wonderful friends she knew and loved.

In honor of her memory and in celebration of her life, a memorial service will be held at Weymouth Funeral Home in Newport News, Virginia, on Saturday, September 7th. A visitation will begin at 11:00am, followed by a memorial service at 12:00pm.

Sarah, you have touched the lives of friends and family with your generosity of spirit, your strength, and your ever faithful love. You left our world a better place and you leave us with many beautiful memories of a life well lived.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that a contribution be made to one of her favorite charities, The Salvation Army, SPCA, or Guiding Eyes for the Blind.
