WILLIAM "BILL" MARTEN WESTERMAN, JR.

William (Bill) Marten Westerman, Jr. was born on January 18, 1961, in Bronxville, New York. He passed away unexpectedly and peacefully at home with his family on January 1, 2020. Bill was fearless, incredibly intuitive, wise, kind and forgiving. In the words of his wife of nearly twenty-four years, he was “a good man” and “always willing to help anyone who needed help.” To his family, he was a great father. To his many friends, he was inclusive and big-hearted.

As a teenager, Bill headed north to New Hampshire and then west for adventure, travel, and commercial fishing in California and Alaska. Largely self-educated and extremely well-read, his three favorite books were The Idiot, The Circle, and Flowers for Algernon. A successful entrepreneur, Bill worked diligently and tirelessly growing his businesses.

Bill’s joy in family filled his life. His wife Marinella was his partner in life and business. He dearly loved his stepson Bryan and daughter Megan and related his pride in them with a quick smile. Bill prioritized family relationships and often sat on the porch chatting with his family. Quick-witted and straightforward, he generally made his point very clear.

Bill truly enjoyed the James River Country Club—socializing, playing golf with friends or strangers who were soon-to-be friends. According to a good friend, he “was a champion of a person, passionate, competent, inquisitive, and with an overload of common sense.” He was a life-long learner with an venturesome spirit and recently began taking flying lessons.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Ida (Iekje) Verschuyl Westerman. He is survived by his wife, Marinella Mancuso Westerman; daughter, Megan Inga Westerman, and stepson, Bryan Wayne Shaw. He is also survived by his father, William (Bill) Marten Westerman, Sr.; older sister, Johanna Karin Westerman Guy and husband Joseph (Joe), older brother Jan Hendrik Westerman and wife Shelly, and Richard (Rick) Ronald Westerman and wife, Alyssa. In addition, Bill will be fondly remembered by mother-in-law, Anna M. Mancuso, sister-in-law, Rosella Thomas, and brothers-in-law, Richard C. Mancuso and Ronald G. Mancuso. In addition, Bill leaves behind Elizabeth (Beth) Westerman and a number of nieces and nephews.

In sum, the recurrent testimony of family and friends recount Bill Westerman as a husband, father, and friend who gave and gave unerringly. A perpetual quick grin and a spirit of joy are how William Marten Westerman, Jr. will be remembered.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Union Mission (unionmissionministries.org).
