On February 12, 2021, Bernice M. “Buck” Hayes, Jr. went home to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  He was born in Lumberton, NC in 1931, the fourth of five children born to Bernice and Lillian Hayes and was their last surviving child.  He moved to Newport News in 1952 to work at the Newport News Shipyard where he met Dana Garten, the love of his life.  They married in 1954 and raised their four children in Newport News until the Lord called Dana home in 2008.  He worked in the shipbuilding industry until 2002, retiring from John J. McMullen Associates.  He was a longtime member of North Riverside Baptist Church and First Baptist Church of Newport News. 

He is survived by his children, Rodney and wife, Sandra of Newport News, Deborah Weiler and her husband, Alan of Newport News, Steven and his wife, Joy of Yorktown and Nancy Burleson and her husband, Rahn of Newport News; 11 grandchildren:  Eric, Ruedi, Stephanie, Ben (deceased), Lily, Nolan, Brandon, Sam, Drew, Matt, and Joan; 11 great-grandchildren: Ellie, Lincoln, Ellyse, Silas, Scarlet, Sophia, Sawyer, Willow, Summer, Jackson, and Luke with 2 more on the way.  The family will have a private Graveside Service at Peninsula Memorial Park. Arrangements by Weymouth Funeral Home.

There is not enough space to write what I could about Buck. He knew NRBC better that those who were there building it. (1950's) He & Danna (Ben) were some of the first to be a part of the Faithful Prayer Warriors Email. I was blessed that God put us together & to be able to minister, love, laugh & Cry with him. I know one thing is for sure. There is rejoicing in heaven with his Love & my friend Dana. I miss this family with my tears. Until we meet again. I will continue to pray for your family. It is so hard to have a prayer list that has to have names removed. Bless these family members. I am blessed for knowing them. I love you all. jlockst4gmail.com
