Serving the Community Since 1960

A Memorial Service will be held on June 20, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at Weymouth Funeral Home Chapel.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Don Harris, 64, Yorktown, VA,  Tuesday June 16, 2020, at home surrounded by his loving wife, Debbie, and their two sons, Donald Jr. and David.

Don was born in Welch, WV on November 1, 1955.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Grover and Jean Harris.

The legacy Don Harris leaves behind can be seen in the lives of those with which he surrounded himself.  Left to immortalize his memories are his wife Debbie, two sons Donald Jr. and David (Angela), and grandchildren John Winter and Emily Heather, brother Dr. Bill Harris (Brandy), sister Jane Ellis (Steve).  Also left to treasure their special “Uncle Fuzz” are several nieces, nephew and great nieces and great nephews.  Our many friends who surrounded him with love and support, along with his Shipyard Family, who even after retirement he was “on call” for any assistance they needed.

In the fall of 1978 a new adventure started for Don Harris when he married Debbie Walke after a chance meeting doing laundry in the small town of Christiansburg, VA.  They moved to Newport News, VA where he would have an illustrious career of 36+ years with Newport News Shipbuilding.  During his time, he and his wife Debbie would raise their two boys together. No matter how demanding work might have been, he always made time for his family.

Don’s greatest passions were spending time with family and helping others.

Everyone who asked would always receive help from Don. No matter the subject, difficulty or situation in 20 minutes he would have a solution or fix any problem. Thus earning him the nickname “20 Minute Harris”.

In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the charity of your choice.  We are so grateful for our family and friends and this wonderful journey we have shared.

Debbie, Don, David and family, our thoughts, love and prayers are with all of you. My words cannot express my feelings and my heart aches for you. We were all better for knowing him, he was certainly one of a kind and touched so many with his courage. Many of my best memories are of times spent with Don. His legacy will live on in all those that he shared his life with.

Debbie and families,
I am sending thoughts and hope we all continue to have Donnie live on through us and our fond, loving memories of him. I cannot image him having anyone other than you by his side. I had a most memorable time meeting you and talking with you two! I also have so many little fun memories of us playing when we were kids, along with Mike Christian. Good, fun, caring soul to many of us in different times of our lives. In our hearts.

Don was the “bravest man I have ever know.” Inspite of the nature of his illness, never once have I observed his head hanging down. In fact he was always a source of encouragement to me personally and my freak at the shipyard. Would drop whatever he was doing to help. We have fought many battles side by side and win as a team. I cannot express how much I will miss my good friend, but the suffering and pain has ended now. My prayers are extended to him family in these sad times. God Bless you and take comfort in knowing that God has this and you...
Sincerely Curtis McTeer - Procurement at NNS.

Our hearts are with you in this time of sorrow. We send our love and prayers. Don lit up any room he walked in and we are lucky to have had him in our lives. His conversations will be missed and his great smile. We will miss him dearly.
