Rose Higgins, 86, of Newport News passed away on Thursday, May 18, 2023 at Mennowood Retirement Community. She was born in Redbank, New Jersey to Salvatore Melina and Luigina (Straneri) Melina. This is where she met the love of her life, John Stanley Raub Higgins, Jr. while he was stationed there is the U.S. Navy. They married on October 30, 1955 and moved to Hampton, VA until 1968 and then moved to Newport News. She worked in retail at GEX, Robert Hall Village, and K-Mart. Together they had three children.

She was the caregiver, and she always wanted to help others, whether family or friends. Rose would entertain for Christmas, and everyone would look forward to her company and her cooking. She enjoyed time with her family and always supported them in whatever they did. She especially loved her grandchildren and would light up when she was around them. In the early years of Busch Gardens, Rose and her husband enjoyed going to concerts and met many country singers. She enjoyed traveling and meeting family members in Florida and New Jersey.

Ms. Higgins was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, John Stanley Raub Higgins, Jr.; her parents, Luigina and Salvatore Melina; her brother, Saverio Sammy Melina and her sister, Mary Teresa Miller.

Rose is survived by her three children, John Stanley Raub Higgins III, James Higgins (Robin) and Tina Woods (Gary); eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 25, 2023 at Weymouth Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 26, 2023 at Weymouth Funeral Home with Interment to follow at Peninsula Memorial Park. Arrangements by Weymouth Funeral Home.
