George Nicholas Markos passed away on Tuesday, March 2, 2021.  He was born in 1934 and was preceded in death by his parents Nick and Zoe Markos and brother, Pete Markos.  George was a life-long resident of Newport News and graduated from Newport News High School in 1952. George served in the U.S. Army and graduated from the University of Virginia McIntire School of Commerce where he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity and the UVA Boxing team.  George was a member of the Thomas Jefferson Society of Alumni and the UVA Lawn Society.

George retired from Newport News Shipbuilding after 30 years.  He was an ardent runner enjoying this sport for many years.  He enjoyed gardening, always generously offering tomatoes, figs and vegetables fresh from his garden to others.  George had persistent passion for history, evidenced by his membership in the Virginia Historical Society, the Virginia Preservation and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. George was an enthusiastic fan of UVA sports attending football and basketball games regularly.

George is survived by his brother, Mickey Markos; his sister-in law, Athena Markos; his niece, Zoe Markos Lumpkin and husband, Greg; his great-nephew, Chris Theoharis and wife, Sarah and his great-niece, Athena Theoharis and fiancé, Kyle; nephew, Michael Dean and nieces, Sherry Smeland and Lori Young as well as many extended family.

George was a wonderful and loving son, brother and uncle who will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

On Sunday evening, March 7, 2021, a Trisagion Prayer Service will be held at 5:00 p.m at Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 60 Traverse Road, Newport News, Virginia. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the Prayer Service starting at  4:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be conducted on Monday, March 8, 2021 at 11:30 a.m at the church officiated by Rev. George Chioros.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a contribution to Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church or a charity of your choice.
