Serving the Community Since 1960

Memorial Service and reception at a later date.

Another member of the greatest generation has been lost.  Joseph Hubert Kelly of Hampton died on February 25, 2021 in Riverside Hospital after a second bout of pneumonia.  Joe was born in 1925 in Hollywood, Florida to Hubert Joseph and Katherine Nye Kelly and raised in Brooklyn, New York.  He joined the Navy just after he turned 17 to serve his country in World War II.  He survived the West Loch disaster and the invasions of Saipan, Tinian, and Pelelieu and was a plank owner on both the LST129 and the Midway.  Since coming to Newport News while the Midway was still under construction, he lived most of his life on the Peninsula.  He was a proud graduate of the College of William and Mary, and cheered for Tribe football, win or lose.

Joe married the late Edna Portwood of Newport News, and together, they raised five children.  He founded All-Good Supply, a local business still family owned and operated.  Joe was an athlete all of his life, beginning as a short track speed skater where he excelled in mid-distance races and became the New York State champion.  He was a tennis junkie for many years, playing several times a week at Hilton Tennis Club and Centre Court.  In retirement, he returned to golf, and enjoyed swearing at many golf balls at James River Country Club.  Joe was a man who spoke his mind and let the chips fall where they may; and he did not suffer fools gladly; but he was also compassionate, fair and generous of spirit.

Joe was preceded in death by his daughter, Marie Bennett; his son, Tim Kelly; and his grandson, Josh Stewart.  He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Rebecca Ritter Kelly; his children, Kathleen Kelly (husband, Joe Aust) of Charlottesville, Patrick Kelly of Gloucester, Tom Kelly (wife, Michelle) of Hampton; daughter-in-law, Jacki Kelly of Roanoke; his grandchildren, Chelsea Greenwood, Tim Brown, Lauren Kelly, Jessica McLean, JT Kelly, Nick Bennett and Natalie Bennet and great grands. Brayden, Dominic, Danie, Dalia, Canon, Carter, Caleigh, and Conor.

A private Graveside Service with Military Honors was held at Peninsula Memorial Park. A Memorial Service and reception for all our friends and family will be held at a later date TBA.  If you would like to honor his memory, the family requests that in lieu of flowers, you contribute to The USO of Hampton Roads, P.O. Box 8097, Norfolk, VA 23503. Arrangements by Weymouth Funeral Ho
