Martha Maria Korfmacher Kightlinger

Services are private

Martha “Margret” Maria Korfmacher Kightlinger, 92, devoted wife, mother, daughter, and sister, went to be with God on Sunday, May 9, 2021.

She was born in Bottrop, Westphalia, Germany. She grew up in Düsseldorf, Germany, during World War II and attended school through 8th grade. After the war, she met and married her beloved husband, Gerald, a career soldier in the U.S. Army. His assignments took them to Arkansas, Oklahoma, Alaska, Kentucky, France, Germany, and Maryland. She supervised the Language Lab at the Fort George G. Meade, Maryland, Education Center for 10 years.

She loved traveling with her husband and family, and was particularly proud of her two daughters, who both earned advanced degrees. She and her family lived in Severn, Maryland, for more than 30 years, where she was a long-time member of the Fort Meade German Wives Club. Later, she moved to Williamsburg, Virginia, then to the Warwick Forest Retirement Community in Newport News, and finally to Riverside Healthy Living Community in Smithfield.

Mrs. Kightlinger was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Gerald; her parents, Heinrich and Katharina Korfmacher, and stepmother, Anna Korfmacher; her brother, Heinz, and her sisters, Annie, Wilma, Resi, Kitty, Gerda, and Margret.

Mrs. Kightlinger is survived by daughter, Gloria Womble and husband, Frank of Suffolk, Virginia; daughter, Diane Kightlinger of Missoula, Montana; many nieces and nephews; and her favorite freckled dog, Patrick.

A private funeral service will be held at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, Suffolk, Virginia. Interment will follow at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Both services are being coordinated by Weymouth Funeral Home. The family extends its gratitude to the nurses, certified nursing assistants, and staff at Riverside Healthy Living Community Smithfield, and to Debbie Boyd and other members of the Riverside Hospice staff.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to their Alzheimer’s Association fundraising team at:  http://act.alz.org/goto/lesfemmes
