Services will be private

MSgt. Paul James Murphy Jr., 80, of Hampton, passed away on Thursday, January 21, 2021. He was the first of seven children born to Paul and Margaret Robertson Murphy in Scranton, PA.

After graduating from City College in Baltimore, MD, he enlisted in the USAF, where he would travel the world, meet his future wife, and receive many decorations. During his military service, he was awarded the Air Force Longevity Service Medal with Four Oak Clusters, National Defense Service Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal, and most importantly, in 1966, the USAF Air Defense Command Chess Champion.

Paul married his wife of 49 years, Wapee P’tu (Dhu) Kumphan, in Kumphawapi, Thailand on March 25, 1973.

After retiring from active duty in 1982, at LAFB, he made his new home here, in Hampton, VA. He was known as a professional yard sale shopper; going as far as to map out his destinations during the week and to pack his lunch for his shopping day out.   At home you would find him in one of two places…. his “cave” or outside working in his garden.  In his “cave”, he would watch live sports, the history channel and game shows on his 13 televisions, while working on five to six crossword puzzles, and actively piecing together two to three table puzzles. In his garden, he grew the best cherry tomatoes and waited patiently on perfectly ripe blueberries. He will be remembered most by his grandchildren for having all of them over the week before Christmas to decorate the tree and bake dozens of cookies.

On visits home to Baltimore, you would find the Irishman having intellectual conversations with his siblings that lasted into the wee hours of the morning or sitting at a table with nephews for days long chess matches.

Paul was preceded in death by his wife, Dhu Murphy; his two brothers, Douglas Murphy and Brian Murphy; brothers-in-law, Doug Sartor and Abass Dabirsiaghi and sister-in-law, Debbie Murphy. He is survived by his four children and their spouses, Jett Murphy (Parrish Wilson), Tep Murphy (Natalie), Seamus Murphy (Christina), and Kat Edmondson (Paul); two brothers, Richard Murphy (Phyllis) and Kevin Murphy (Bobbi); two sisters, Sharon Sartor, Carol Dabirsiaghi (Susan); sister-in-law, Clara; nine grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank their many friends for their compassionate words and prayers, the health professionals at Riverside Regional Medical Center for their care and kindness, and Hartland Hospice for their support and guidance.

Paul was an avid reader and held a wealth of knowledge; therefore, in lieu of flowers, pick up a book and read in his honor.  Please stop by the guestbook at Legacy.com and post the title of the book you read.

Private Services at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.  Arrangements by Weymouth Funeral Home.
